This section contains basic background information on thalassemia. Details are provided to help distinguish between some of the subtly different forms of thalassemia. Chelation treatment of thalassemia is addressed, including oral chelation therapy.
This section reviews iron metabolism and some of the conditions that result from disturbances in iron metabolism. Both iron overload and iron deficiency are addressed. Protocols discuss the replacement of iron stores using iron dextran infusions.
